Annual Meeting Minutes - November 8th

The meeting was held at Oak Ridge Town Hall at 8315 Linville Rd. Oak Ridge, NC 27310

Present were David Bowman, Madeline Busch, Ann Schneider, Lauri Reneer, Shane Beal, Josef Zimmerman, Bruce Frankel, Pat Fehlig, Annette Joyce, Tim DeStasio, John Carr, George McClellan, DeDe Cunningham, Mickey Tingen, Alan Abrams, Phillip Hanks, and Ben Walraven.

The meeting was called to order at 8:15am by Phillip Hanks.

Members introduced themselves and what they’d like to see from the organization.

Then, the floor opened for nominations to the board of Directors.

Nominations were Jeff Kubly, Maureena Sheppherd, Bruce Frankel, Shane Beal, and Alan Abrams.

Ann Schneider made a motion to adopt the slate of nominees (since enough people were otherwise not running for re-election).

It was seconded by Mickey Tingen.

All in favor said “I”.

No Opposed.

The slate was adopted.

Stepping down from the board are Angelique Fuller, Dave Kiddy, Brandy Owen, and Kimberly Stoll.

Remaining on board are Mickey Tingen, Phillip Hanks, Trisha Pegg, Susan Greeson, and Ann Schneider.

Ann Schneider gave a town update.

The meeting was opened by President Phillip Hanks.  

Minutes from the August meeting will be forwarded by Secretary Brandy Owen.

The financial reporting system is being converted from QB to Xero online accounting by new Treasurer Trisha Pegg.

Great Pumpkin Event update from Angel Fuller

  • This year’s event will be held on October 27th from 3 – 5 PM at Oak Ridge Commons.   Set up by 2:30 PM was requested due to early arriving Trick or Treaters

  • Table sign up is available on the MOR website.  Additional spaces will be available for non-profit organizations and non-MOR members

  • Sponsorships have all been sold

  • For ongoing see updates on MOR’s Facebook page

Guest Speaker Keith Hiatt, CPA  from Breslow Starling strongly recommended consultation with your tax adviser now or in the near future due to the many changes for individuals and businesses in the tax codes for 2018.  Keith’s comments and suggestions included:

  • Review 2017 returns

  • Standard deductions are higher for more people

  • Withholding requirements have been reduced

  • Changes in depreciation (less) and write offs (more) for companies

  • New positive provisions for LLC’s and S Corporations

  • A team of advisors was highly recommended for all small business owners

  • Emphasized the importance of Estate Planning

  • Sales and Use Taxes will likely be the cause of most audits in NC for 2018 returns

  • The importance of business and tax planning was emphasized

The Educational Moment was presented by Bruce Frankel and his topic was “Traditional Approach to Making Effective Business Decisions.”  Bruce stressed the importance of using the numbers and a spreadsheet versus decision making by gut feel. See the attached handout for highlights.

Member introductions were made and 90% (my estimate) were completed within the requested 30 seconds.

Business on Tap

  • September’s Business on Tap was hosted by Andy Michaels at Oak Ridge Physical Therapy and celebrating their 10th year of business.  Thank you and congratulations to Andy and his team.

  • October’s Business on Tap will be October 9th at the Oak Ridge Room hosted by Madeline Busch and Next Step Ministries.

The Scholarship Committee has selected its first recipient of the new scholarship for a cadet at Oak Ridge Military Academy.  The winner will be announced and recognized on September 29th at the military academy as part of their homecoming festivities.   Many cadets families will be in attendance and MOR members are encouraged to attend.

Testimonials were given to:

  • Tim DeStasio and Southern Comfort Consulting and Services for outstanding service to several MOR members air conditioning units during the many weeks of high temperatures this summer.

  • Bruce Frankel and The Mindful Traveler for planning and execution for several MOR members recent vacations.

Announcements:

  • The Town of Oak Ridge 20th Anniversary Lawn Party has been rescheduled from September 15th to September 22nd due to the of forecasted Hurricane Florence coming to town.  Scheduled events include a pie baking contest and a beard contest.

  • Kwanis Golf for Kids Tournament on September 23rd at Pine Knolls Golf Course

  • Oak Ridge Military Academy Golf Tournament on September 30th at Pine Knolls Golf Course

Financial Report: Current finances are good and on track. All of the the Ridgefest funds have not been received yet, but this year will be the best yet.

May 2018 Membership Minutes

Membership Meeting Minutes

May 10, 2018

Run the Ridge Glow Run Update:  Update provided by Phillip Hanks.  Organizer Andy Michels is putting together the 10th annual Run the Ridge event and the 2nd annual Glow Run.  The course will be through the woods and around the park sidewalk - at Oak Ridge Town Park on Friday night June 1st.  Registration will begin at 7:00 PM.  Additional volunteers are still needed.   Tee shirts will be free at check-in for runners that pre-registered online on MOR’s website.  Headlamps and glow sticks have been ordered and will be available for sale at the event.  Next Step Ministry will be the beneficiary of this year’s run.  Madeline Busch gave a brief overview of Next Step’s services as providing food, shelter, and other services for women in transition from abusive relationships.   

RidgeFest Update:  Update provided by Phillip Hanks for Randy Floss who was out of town.  Everything is on track but a few volunteers are still needed (see Randy Floss) for this year’s RidgeFest running May 31st – June 2nd. Sponsorships are sold out. However, a handful of “Supporter level” opportunities remain at $100. Vestal Buick GMC is this year’s main sponsor at the Kryptonite Level.  There will be several additional food trucks this year on Friday and Saturday.  The Merchant tent area will be at the entry near the carnival rides.  Summit Church will have a teen takeover targeted especially for teens.  A large car show, featuring EuroHaus  & Platinum Sponsor - Foreign Cars Italia, will be on Friday. There will be a climbing wall and dunk tank on Saturday.  Fireworks, brought to you by the Town of Oak Ridge, will conclude the event Saturday night.  Music and carnival rides start up again following fireworks to mitigate traffic congestion.

Treasurer Report:  Update provided by Phillip Hanks for Patti Stokes.  No major changes.  A couple sponsorships for RidgeFest are still due.

Scholarship Update:  Dave Kiddy reported that the scholarship committee has reviewed applications from Northwest High School and has selected three finalists for interviews.  The award will be announced May 25th at the NWHS Senior Awards Ceremony.

Applications from rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Oak Ridge Military Academy are due May 25th. The scholarship committee will review applications over the summer and conduct finalist interviews at the beginning of the fall term.  The award will be presented at Parade Day in September.   This is the first scholarship offered to ORMA and is an extension of MOR’s community outreach.

New Members:  Mickey Tingen announced two new members, Mathis Home Improvement and NextHome Triad Realty.

Business on Tap:  Not held this month in favor of a social mixer at Rio Grande and we will skip June as the 1st Tuesday follows the busy RidgeFest weekend.  Thanks to Brandy Owen of The Arche Group for sponsoring and Pepe Silva for hosting the “Rio Mixer” on May 9th at Rio Grande.  The next Business on Tap will be in July (date, location, and speaker to be announced).

Community Development:  Philip Cooke reported a new tenant is expected in the former JP Looney location in 2 – 3 months.  He also said a rezoning request will be submitted to the town for the vacant 3 acre parcel on NC 68 next to Domino’s.

Madeline Busch thanked the MOR and spoke about Next Step Ministries, their works with domestic violence survivors and donations to their store.  They also shared their upcoming event Christmas, Canvas and Corks on Tuesday July 18th located at their Kernersville thrift store.

Susan Greeson introduced Kelly Dentworth from Oak Ridge Military Academy and spoke about their upcoming golf tournament at Pine Knolls the weekend of Oct 20th to coincide with their homecoming festivities. 8:20 am - Meeting was called to order by President Phillip Hanks.

Dave Kiddy of MOR Scholarship Committee presented Cole Pickford of NWHS with a scholarship check of $2,000.  He is planning on attending Notre Dame.  There were 14-15 candidates applying for this scholarship.  Cole has been very active in the community helping handicap children.  He played Baseball and Soccer for NW.  MOR also gave  $100 each to the 2 runner ups.

 

Mickey gave the names of new MOR members including Great Clips, Champion Windows, Import Specialty, Passanante’s, and JP Looneys

 

Bruce Frankel – Education minute - gave a very informative talk on “Surveys” with suggestions of:  keep the surveys short, give enough options, must be timely and relevant.  4 reasons to do a survey:

Learn about what motivates respondents and what’s important to them; Give respondents an opportunity to discuss important key topics; it’s an unbiased approach to decision-making and finally it provides a snapshot of the attitudes and behaviors.  

 

Andy Michels – Run the Ridge GLOW – thanked Dede and her husband for their time and efforts; mentioned the night had a large family attendance; it surpassed his expectations and plans to make next year even better.  Next Step Ministries will be the non-profit receiving a donation from this night.

 

Business on TAP was hosted by Brandy Owen owner of The Arche Group – a great presentation.  The upcoming TAP will be on July 11th hosted by Ramilya Siegel with Alan Tate.

Susan Greeson will have an open house on June 15th from 9am-12noon.

Patti Stokes thanked Pat Fehlig and Dave who stayed for hours in the MOR tent during Ridgefest.  Angel Fuller gave a testimonial to Susan Greeson for “wills and pets”.
