Scholarship Requirements and Application
The Merchants of Oak Ridge is offering a scholarship of $2,000 to a graduate of Northwest Guilford High School who has demonstrated outstanding academic and personal achievements, and shows promise of becoming an effective business or community leader.
Completed applications are due by 5 p.m. on last Friday in March.
Early applications are encouraged.
Merchants of Oak Ridge Scholarship - Guidelines
To provide financial assistance for college costs to a Northwest Guilford High School graduate who has demonstrated outstanding academic and personal achievements, and shows promise of becoming an effective business or community leader.
One scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded to a graduating senior of Northwest Guilford High School.
The Scholarship winner will be announced at Northwest’s annual Senior Awards Day event. Funds will be directed to the college or university the student will attend in the fall of the current year and credited to the student’s account.
To be eligible to apply for the Merchants of Oak Ridge Scholarship, applicants must be graduating seniors in good standing at Northwest Guilford High School.
Completed applications and transcripts must be received by the Merchants of Oak Ridge by last Friday in March. Early applications are encouraged.
Terms of the Scholarship
The scholarship recipient must provide the following by July 1st:
(1) Final high school transcripts consistent with his or her past record of achievement
(2) Proof of enrollment at an accredited four-year institution of higher learning
(3) Student’s Account Number
The Merchants of Oak Ridge Scholarship will then be paid, on behalf of the recipient, directly to the recipient’s university to cover eligible educational costs.
Eligible costs must be approved in advance by the Merchants of Oak Ridge Scholarship Committee, and may include tuition; university-provided room and board; required educational textbooks purchased through the university or its bookstore; and student activity or course fees charged by the university.
The Merchants of Oak Ridge reserve the right to select an alternate scholarship recipient in the event the original recipient cannot meet these terms or if the final recipient’s final transcript is judged by the Merchants to be inconsistent with his or her past record of achievement.

Application Review Process
Interviews with Finalists
Based on the review of all eligible applications, up to three finalists will be selected to meet individually with the Merchants of Oak Ridge Scholarship Committee. Following introductions finalists are to provide a brief summary (2-3 minutes) of their educational and career interests. Each finalist will then be invited to ask questions to the Scholarship Committee regarding their careers and educational preparation, as well as follow-up questions. Committee members will, in turn, pose questions to the finalists.
The interview evaluation will be based on:
Ability to form meaningful questions and thoughtful answers
Selection of Award Recipient
The Merchants of Oak Ridge Scholarship Award recipient will be selected based on the following criteria:
Personal achievements (non-academic)
Letters of recommendation
Quality of essay
Potential to serve as an effective leader
